Solidaridad

a small fund for emergencies of the local population

What is Solidaridad and how did it come about?

Solidaridad means solidarity – community spirit – connectedness; and this is exactly what the donations are to be used for. Solidaridad was founded years ago when the son of a long-time amaZOOnico employee urgently needed medical help and the family was unable to raise the money for the operations. Solidaridad collected donations to finance the boy’s operations and treatment. Today, many people who have a job are also entitled to medical support, but everything is far from covered. We also work closely with many people who are not employed, for example the ‘fruit women’ who supply the amaZOOnico with fruit twice a week. In previous Sachamandas, donations were also collected under the title Solidaridad to enable training and further education for young people who had the ambition and the will but could not afford to study. In such cases, a future student sometimes presents themselves at Sachamanda to generate donations or to find a kind soul who wants to support their education.

Helping

But when things are urgent and there is a medical emergency, there is no time for this and it is therefore important to be able to collect donations on an ongoing basis, even without a prior appeal for ‘Solidaridad’ – so that we can respond in an emergency. Solidaridad is therefore intended as support for the families of the Kichwa community, who work and are somehow connected to amaZOOnico and Sachamanda through employment, the sale of fruit or handicrafts. It’s about supporting our neighbours on the island.
This is Solidaridad – working together for the people we care about!
